Wired Sussex Media Jobs and Skills Fair

Yesterday we attended the invaluable Wired Sussex Media Jobs and Skills Fair. Rather than telling you what it's about, I'll allow the good folks at Wired Sussex to do it for me: "As well as recruiting companies there were also media course providers exhibiting; and in addition to the exhibitors there were separate sessions for students and recent graduates, for freelancers, and for more senior candidates.". We ourselves weren't actually there recruiting for any positions in  particular, rather we were just in the Made in Brighton section to chat to attendees and support Wired Sussex and local students.

We took along the hideous face munging software to attract the curious to our stall. This sparked a broad spectrum of emotions, ranging from a horrified student who (understandably) couldn't cope with having my face, to a very impressed charismatic man who was poking his tongue out at the screen and making odd noises. Andy had the fortune of munging his face with the Mayoress, which I don't think many people can lay claim to.

Full Frontal Conference

Recently Andy and I were fortunate enough to attend the Full Frontal JavaScript conference, which was held in a cinema (the Duke of York cinema to be precise). Once the overwhelming sense of déjà vu had passed (See KPG Awards Ceremony), things drifted along smoothly.

Here's a rundown of the highs and lows of the conference (inspired by Colin's Sketcha Kucha I have decided to 'Sketch-a-Speaker', and so I present...)

Christian Heilmann

Sketch of Christian HeilmannThe conference was kicked off with a trip down JavaScript memory lane by Christian Heilmann, a speaker who is well known on the JavaScript / Accessibility conference circuit. He spoke about the hideous misuses of JavaScript in the past, the slightly less hideous misuses in the present and where JavaScript should be embraced with open arms.

Kidney Patient Guide: Freshest Not for Profit website award

The award nominations are in, and we've been nominated in the Freshest Not for Profit category of the Fresh Digital awards for the Kidney Patient Guide website.

KPG

The KPG is a project that we here at Cogapp continue to be proud to have created and to still maintain pro bono ten years after it first went live. It is an information sharing hub and forum for people who suffer from kidney disease and those affected by it. The site has an interactive social media aspect that has been continually active since it was launched - visited by sufferers, their support networks and healthcare professionals alike. We recently revamped the site to give it a sleaker, more modern appearance and better navigation, to even further improve its usefulness for those who use it. Eleanor and I, who both worked on the recent redesign, jet-setted off to Manchester on the train to attend the Fresh Awards ceremony with high hopes for the KPG. While walking through the train, we noticed that the only real difference between the first class carriages and our regular seats was the inclusion of a nice little reading lamp, so we made our own.

Letsema Mapping Interface

Following the launch of the new Letsema Mapping Interface, I thought I'd write a little about how it works and how Letsema are hoping it will benefit them.

"The Letsema initiative is committed to fostering co-operation, collaboration and communication between all funders and aid providers in Lesotho"

Using a combination of geographic coordinates, overlay images and a filtering system we have taken advantage of the Google Maps API to create a map pinpointing the location of organisations and amenities in Lesotho.

Here's an image of the map with everything (so
