Internal Digest 7

The Internal Blog continues to provide Cogappers with a distillation of the somewhat crude and slippery substance that we know as the World Wide Web. Here we present an extract of our favourite finds from the world of design and technology since the start of 2009.

Ever on the lookout for cool, pretty and unique ways to use technology, Joe, our Head of New Technology, pointed us in the direction of several pleasant distractions including:

The National Film Board of Canada's new site, complete with Screening Room, which allows you to watch and learn about over 700 films commissioned since the 1940s. There is also a playlist function. The site comes highly recommended to anyone interested in animation.

A super slow-mo journey through the streets of New York by Vicente Sahuc, created with the help of a steadicam and a skateboard.

And a demo performance of the TENORI-ON, an LED-studded sampler/sequencer described by its makers as "a new digital musical instrument for the 21st century". It's just too bad about the £887 price tag.

At the other end of the spectrum, Fiona shared this beautiful typography by Cameron Moll. These posters are all done using old-fashioned letterpress - no fancy computers - which means they each took about 100 hours to set using metal type.

Back to cyberspace, have you ever wished you could make annotations on webpages? The concept has been knocking about on the web since 1999, though early pioneers were accused of "Web Graffiti". Shiftspace, spotted by Tristan, is the latest open source browser plugin for collaboratively annotating, editing and "shifting" the web. You can add notes and highlights and even swap images or add random shards of HTML, all of which is left there for the [Shiftspace-using] world to see. MoMA are planning to use the technology to add "social" functions to their new website including ratings, comments and personal collections. We'll spare you the sight of Tristan's defacement of the internal blog, but you can install it yourself here.

Augmented Reality is always a favourite topic on the Internal Blog and this month was no exception. Further developments in the field, spotted by Joe, have been employed to impressive effect by an Australian company, Boffswana:

The best part is, you can try it yourself at home with just a printout, a webcam and Adobe Flash. Get augmenting your reality!

And finally, the mystery of how those snazzy augmented reality sections on football replays come about is solved - here's a video of how it's done for American football, also found by Joe.

All mind-bogglingly innovative uses of technology, I'm sure you'll agree.

Well, nearly as innovative as our snigloo, constructed using cutting-edge tupperware technology.

Over and out. Have an ice day! (sorry...)
