Cogapp celebrates launch of the new Metropolitan Museum of Art website
Graphic Design
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a world-class organisation, with a recognisable brand to match. The foundation of our design work was an extensive discovery phase, which meant our designers spent a great deal of time at the Museum looking at every area of design: online, offline and around the Museum. A key theme that emerged from this was to encourage familiarity with the Museum by ensuring consistency between the online experience and the physical building.
Further inspiration came from the research we conducted with Museum visitors. It was clear that they appreciate the classical and established nature of the Museum. It is a prestigious institution, valued for the inspiration its encyclopaedic collection provides. In particular, visitors responded to the authority and scholarship of the Museum’s experts and it was important to users, as well as to the Museum, that the design of the website felt authentic.
Connecting people to the experience of the physical building has been achieved via a sophisticated colour palette and with newly commissioned photography of the galleries. The inspiring artworks are showcased with large and scaleable images, complementing the rich information from the Museum’s curators. The result is a design that is a contemporary take on a classic institution. Rich, muted colour palettes create a natural and reserved style, allowing the work to be centre stage to the website’s navigation and framework.
"We encouraged familiarity with the Museum by ensuring consistency between the online experience and the physical building."
