The Icons Project: from Stonehenge to the Double-Decker Bus

March 2005

Cogapp appointed to develop a virtual collection of the icons of England.

Cogapp has won Culture Online's largest commission to date, following a competitive tendering process and a twelve month planning phase. Culture Online, part of the UK's Department of Culture Media and Sport, has commissioned the Brighton-based company to produce the Icons Project.

When launched later this year, the Icons Project will exhibit a virtual collection of hundreds of England's cultural icons from Stonehenge to the Angel of the North via the Double-Decker bus. Delightful to use, and easy to navigate, with deep content from a wealth of contributing partners, Icons will represent a wonderful experience for users and a creative collaboration between cultural institutions. Associated with the virtual collection, the project will provide activities, both on- and off-line and including a vibrant education programme.

Alex Morrison, Managing Director of Cogapp commented, "Most online projects showcase material from one organisation only. Icons will be different. It will be a landmark for collaborative online projects - bringing material together from many places in a single resource to engage and delight a large public audience. After fifteen years working in the cultural sector it's great to have such a significant opportunity to set the agenda for the next phase."

Mike Greenwood, Commissioning Executive for Culture Online, said: "Cogapp won the contract after a tough tendering process. The company has a strong track record of working in the arts and culture sector and we're really looking forward to working closely with the team."
