National Portrait Gallery Web Site & Portrait Explorer
National Portrait Gallery, London
The Online Collection was first delivered in 1999; the IT Gallery opened in Spring 2000, coinciding with the opening of the Ondaatje Wing. The CD-ROM was published in 2001.
Cogapp have continued to work closely with the NPG on numerous enhancements to the Portrait Explorer and Online Collection. But perhaps what is most impressive is what the NPG has achieved independantly: in the six years since opening, the team at the NPG have expanded the scope of the Portrait Explorer from 10,000 portraits to 50,000, all with high-resolution imagery; and the scope of the online collection has expanded from 10,000 portraits to almos 90,000, of which approximately 49,000 are illustrated.
We have also worked with the NPG on further developments of the web site, including an e-commerce facility (2001); and of the portrait explorer, including customised version for their Regency Galleries (200x) and regional versions at Bodelwyddan Castle (200x) and Beningborough Hall (2006).
What They Said
In October 2001, the 'Good Web Guide to Museums and Galleries' wrote:
The National Portrait Gallery boasts one of the most comprehensive and effective online search engines among all the national and international museums.
... An amazingly comprehensive search engine gives this musem probably the largest online collection in the world.
The site received a five star maximum rating and, according to the reviewer, it 'oozes modernity and chic.'
