Micro Gallery
National Gallery, London
We worked closely with the team at the National Gallery for three years developing the system. During this time we established technical feasibility of a new kind of multimedia system, devised the information architecture, undertook user testing, built the back office systems for content management and production, devised and wrote a compilation and run-time system to deliver a very responsive and error-free publication on what, in today's terms, was very underpowered hardware.
In the process we helped the National Gallery solve a series of very fundamental problems including colour image processing, anti-aliased text rendering, hypertext mark-up, smart card print control, personalised tours and interactive page layout. We even came up with the name for the system.
The Micro Gallery was delivered in July 1991 on time for the opening of the National Gallery's Sainsbury Wing. From 1991 to 2005 we provided regular assistance to the National Gallery to help with maintenance and to keep the Micro Gallery system up to date with changes in the Collection.
