Cogapp helps the Alliance to map action against AIDS
December 2010
To coincide with World Aids Day, we have created a unique visualisation of the impact the International HIV/AIDS Alliance is having on the HIV epidemic.
The Alliance, a global partnership of organisations working in more than 40 developing countries, reached 3.2 million people with its services in 2009.
The new mapping visualisation provides easy-to-understand information about the Alliance’s impact across four regions: Africa, Asia, Europe (Eastern Europe), and The Americas (Latin America and the Caribbean).
For each region, it maps data relating to the number of:
- people reached with information, education and communication materials and/or activities;
- people reached directly through services (excluding IEC);
- condoms distributed;
- organisations supported financially;
- decision-makers or leaders reached through advocacy.
In addition, country pages provide data relating to:
- population;
- number of people living with HIV/AIDS;
- prevalence of HIV;
- prevalence of TB;
- organizations working with HIV/AIDS Alliance.
Greg Hadfield, Cogapp’s director of strategic projects, said the development was further evidence of Cogapp’s expertise in data-visualisation.
He said: “It has been a privilege to work with the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, which is making a remarkable impact on people’s lives around the world. If funding can be made availableWith the right level of investment, the reporting of real-time data relating to HIV/AIDS – and its prevention – will could inform the actions of decision-makers and organisations tackling the disease worldwideglobal epidemic.”
Sam McPherson, associate director (field programmes) for the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, said: “The Alliance puts a high priority on ensuring that we collect and report on our programmes. We need to be transparent and accountable both to our donors and, critically, to our beneficiaries. There is great potential for achieving both these aims by presenting our data in an accessible and user-friendly way.
“We see this interactive map as just the beginning of a very exciting journey towards a vision where data really can be used to bring the critical work of the Alliance to life. We are extremely delighted to be working with Cogapp. They clearly share this vision and have worked closely with us to produce this product. We look forward to a continued collaboration.”
The International HIV/AIDS Alliance - based in Hove, within a mile of Cogapp’s offices - is a global partnership of more than 36 nationally-based linking organisations, including an international Secretariat (with offices based in the United Kingdom, United States, Belgium and India as well as regional representatives), working to support community action on AIDS in developing countries.
These linking organisations help local community groups and other non-governmental organisations to take action on AIDS. They are supported by technical expertise, policy and advocacy work, and fundraising carried out across the Alliance.
The Alliance has provided support to organisations from more than 40 developing countries in more than 3,000 projects, reaching some of the poorest and most vulnerable communities with HIV prevention, care and support, and improved access to treatment.
