Great North Museum interactives win BIMA Award
November 2009

The interactive installations we produced for the Great North Museum (GNM) in Newcastle-upon-Tyne have won a British Interactive Media Association (BIMA) Award in the 'Offline: Kiosk, Installation or On-site Application' category.

The ceremony for the BIMA Awards - organised in association with Digital Arts - was held at KOKO in Camden last night to celebrate the work of the entire UK digital creative industry. Amidst tough competition from various different sectors within the category, our GNM installations won the award, demonstrating that the judges saw them as the best use of interactivity within a physical setting.

The GNM interactives and audio-visual (AV) installations, created in conjunction with GNM staff, exhibition designers Casson Mann and Nick Bell Design, include an interactive guide to animals, wall-sized recreations of oceans and ancient temples, a journey through the Egyptian afterlife and more. You can read about the installations in greater detail in our case study here, or about the team's experiences developing and installing them on our blog here. The award acknowledges that the installations utilise user interaction to achieve things that would be otherwise impossible or difficult via other media types.

Cogapp's Managing Director Alex Morrison said, “We’re delighted to have won this award – Cogapp’s second in less than two months.  It’s fantastic to have wider recognition for this demanding and innovative project. This success was made possible by a great collaboration - we are very grateful to Casson Mann, Nick Bell Design, and the staff at Great North Museum.  It was a wonderful project to work on.”
