ICONS unveils its latest Icons of England

ICONS - A Portrait of England announced its second wave of icons today, attracting a wave of media attention from ITN, Sky News, Channel 5, regional radio and press across the country, and national dailies including the Guardian, the Times, the Telegraph and the Daily Star.

The new list of 21 - chosen from nominations from thousands of people from England and across the globe -is another step in the creation of an online collection that aims to provide a snapshot of the life of the nation in the 21st Century. The 21 new icons are:

The Domesday Book
Blackpool Tower
Hadrian's Wall
HMS Victory
The Globe
The Notting Hill Carnival
The mini-skirt
Cricket
Brick Lane
The Hay Wain
The Sutton Hoo helmet
The Lindisfarne Gospels
Pride and Prejudice
York Minster
The Origin of Species
The Eden Project
Big Ben
Morris Dancing
The Pub
The Machin (Queen's head) stamp

ICONS has attracted hundreds of thousands of votes for the nation’s favourite icons. Prior to today’s launch there had been around a quarter of a million visits to the site, more than 5,000 suggested nominations and around 300,000 votes. These figures are now rising rapidly in reaction to the recent media attention.
