MoMA launches German Expressionism collection website in collaboration with Cogapp
April 2011

The Museum of Modern Art in New York recently opened German Expressionism: The Graphic Impulse (March 27–July 11, 2011), a new exhibition, featuring an accompanying website, developed by MoMA in collaboration with Kiss Me I’m Polish and Cogapp, and with interactive book page-turning animations by RenderMonkey.

The exhibition, online collection, and publication are the result of a four-year project to conserve, catalogue, and digitise 3,200 German Expressionist works on paper in MoMA’s collection, thanks to the generous support of Gregory Weingarten and the Annenberg Foundation.

The German Expressionism collection website encompasses two interconnected sections: one that enables visitors to explore the movement and the importance of the works within it, and a second section, which allows visitors to search and browse the works in the collection.

Cogapp’s work on the website enables users to search and browse the German Expressionist works in MoMA’s overall collection, and filter works for the first time by theme or technique. Prints, illustrated books, portfolios, periodicals, and drawings in this collection are highlighted in depth for the first time, an important development in MoMA’s online collection.

We have worked with the Museum on a number of different projects over the years, from providing technology for MoMA’s online collection to developing the critically acclaimed interactive MoMA guide in 2008. We’re delighted to be able to extend this successful, collaborative relationship by working on such an inspiring website.
