British Museum

Website Design & Information Architecture

About the Project

The British Museum’s collection is worldwide in origin and is intended for use by the citizens of the world. To reach the world and do justice to its collections, the museum needs a first class website and a great showcase for its objects. In 2006, Cogapp won the job to help the British Museum replace its old site with a new one that would bring it up to date and give the museum a platform for ambitious future developments.

Working closely with the British Museum project team, Cogapp delivered a completely new information architecture and design framework grounded in extensive research of the institution and its audiences. Within six months of the new site’s launch, unique visitors, visits and average page views had all more than doubled. Within nine months repeat visits had more than tripled. Extension of the online collection is now explicitly stated as a key element in the British Museum’s five year plan.
