Great North Museum

Interactive & Audio-Visual Installations

About the Project

The £26 million Great North Museum brings together collections from four separate exhibition spaces in Newcastle, placing everything from a planetarium and life-size replica Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton to a large-scale model of Hadrian’s Wall, all under one (very large) roof. To add a digital component to the already ground-breaking museum space, they needed a set of interactives and audiovisual experiences, as diverse as the collections themselves. We worked with them to provide fifteen interactives, four large-scale animations, three videos and three audio presentations ranging from an interactive guide to animals,  a touch-surface map, an animated Egyptian frieze and even a sound and light journey into the afterlife.

We worked closely with exhibition designers Casson Mann and Nick Bell Design to ensure each piece would reflect the look and feel of each space, and meet their exceptionally high production values. The complex undertaking included creating or licensing numerous images, animations, video and audio elements, programming all the interactives, and installing each element on highly specific hardware such as high-resolution touchscreens, 50" monitors and large touch-membrane tables.

The Great North Museum installations won the BIMA Award in the 'Offline: Kiosk, Installation or On-Site Application' category in 2009.

Accolades

"Combining the fruits of the labours of Victorian scholars from the North East of England with the very latest graphic technology. Not only is the result jaw-droppingly impressive, it also unlocks the research potential of this world-class collection for generations to come."

Professor Paul Younger, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Engagement, Newcastle University and chair of the Great North Museum board

"We have worked closely with Cogapp to develop some fantastic interactive displays for the new Museum, which really help to bring the exhibits to life. We are delighted with the results and I’m sure that the new displays will be enjoyed by a huge number of visitors!"
